Great Langdale Course

The Great Langdale Marathon Course

Awesomely difficult but staggeringly beautiful and great for spectating. This is a two lap course which describes itself as the “World's Toughest Road Marathon".

The race starts at the New Dungeon Ghyll in the Langdale Valley - and after about 1 mile you're straight up a 1 in 3 to Blea Tarn, then proceed around to Little Langdale.
A great pub here - The Three Shires.

Descend from Little Langdale, turn right at the very bottom and back up to the A593 main road.
Left here and along, then down a steep hill on the main road until there is a narrow track off to the right - to Skelwith Fold.

A gorgeous little rolling climb to the hamlet, then drop down to Skelwith Bridge.

Then straight up the restricted access 25% climb, round Loughrigg Tarn on the footpath, up the Grasmere road, then a hairpin left to Langdale Youth Hostel / High Close. From here you drop down to the main road opposite Elterwater and the Langdale Hotel/Time shares.

Turn right along to Chapel Stile - a pleasant little village. And carry right along the valley back to the New Dungeon Ghyll. And that's one lap - repeat!

And enjoy a great video of the 2012 Marathon here:
